Psalm 17:1

Hear a just cause, O LORD, Attend to my cry; Give ear to my prayer which is not from deceitful lips.
Psalm 17:1

The psalms can be classified under a few different headings. There are psalms of worship, psalms of laments, psalms of thanksgiving, psalms of wisdom, and psalms considering our God as King. Psalm 17 is a psalm of lament. David is in trouble, and in his distress, he cries out to God for help. Spurgeon said that David would not have been a man after God's own heart had he not been a man of prayer.

This psalm gives us some wonderful insights into effective prayer. I hope you will take the time to read it today for yourself. David will pray with confidence because he has been living a godly life (v. 1-5). He will also pray with confidence because he knows and is convinced of God's greater love for Him (v. 6-8), and finally he prays with confidence because the need is real and his God is ever present to help (v. 9-14).

Standing on the solid ground of prayer,

Pastor Jack Abeelen
