Psalms 141:1-2

LORD, I cry out to You; Make haste to me! Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You. Let my prayer be set before You as incense, The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
Psalms 141:1-2

We read in Revelation 5:8 of four living creatures and 24 elders falling down before the Lamb, each having golden bowls full of incense which are the prayers of the saints. These prayers of the saints—many of which have remained without answer for thousands of years— will find their fulfillment in the events to come (Revelation 19:1-2). In Revelation 8:3-4, we read of an angel who has a golden censer and is given incense to offer with the prayers of the saints upon the golden alter before the throne of God.

According to our verse for this devotion, the continual cries of God's elect throughout history are like the fragrance of incense which rises to God. For sure, we don't always see answers to our cries and prayers that are sent heavenward. But there will come a day when they will be remembered and answered. Jesus said, "And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?" (Luke 18:7). So be encouraged, your prayers are valuable to the Lord and are not forgotten. They are all recorded and safely stored in heaven. Know for sure, when on our knees, we are contributing to the contents of these bowls. Like the sacrifices of old, they are a sweet incense upon the golden altar of heaven.
