2 Samuel 9:1

Now David said, "Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?"
2 Samuel 9:1

Notice that here in this verse, it was David who had it in his heart to actively go out and search for any descendants of Saul that might still be alive, so that he might "show kindness to them" for Jonathan's sake. It was the typical practice in those times for a king to go out seeking those who were related to the one who ruled before them. But not so that they might show kindness to them, but so that they might get rid of them, ending any of their plans to take back the throne. But that was not David's desire, he had given his word to Jonathan, that as King, he would not cut off his kindness to his descendants.

In this, we see God's heart toward man as well, that's why Jesus came. "The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost"(Luke 19:10). And as David demonstrates, it is always God who goes seeking after those who need salvation, those who are without hope, those who on their own and have no way of finding life.

So we can go out sharing the gospel with confidence, knowing that God is desiring to use His word to reach out to a lost and dying world.
